Oway Stylist Spotlight: Daniel Aydelott

oway-hairstylist-daniel-aydelott

This month, we’re celebrating an Oway stylist whose incredible skill and creativity never fail to inspire us and our #HolisticHairTribe. His unique approach to color and hair design has earned him a loyal client base who consider him as one of the best stylists in San Francisco, CA. Meet Daniel Aydelott of HoxtonTom Salon!

Read his interview below!

Tell us how you started your career as a hair stylist.

My career in hair began 9 years ago, but my love for color has been lifelong.  I have always been very affected by color.  My very first job was at 15, I was painting car parts!  I went to different colleges and majored in different areas of art. I became a freelance makeup artist, then got my cosmetology license to be more “well-rounded.”  I fell in love with hair color!  It could transform a person in a more permanent way than makeup could.

I stayed in the San Francisco area and became a “good” hairstylist.  I wanted to become a “great” hair colorist.  A dear friend of mine went to the renowned diPietro Todd Salons and told me to come along.  There, I started over as an assistant in an intense, 3-year color-specialist program.  After that, I worked as a colorist for them in their Silicon Valley salon in Palo Alto for a while. As blessed as I was, I had developed several allergies and sensitivities, from food, to fragrance, to color!  I would go home and wake up with migraines, rashes, hives and respiratory issues. After an intense car accident, I moved to a salon closer to where I lived. I planned to be my own boss, where I could control what I was exposed to.  Two of my dear friends Glenn Svetich and Jennifer Ross, who are also specialists and educators, opened Hoxton Tom Salon in San Francisco. Their goal was just like mine: to create a salon environment that was nontoxic, and keep the art of hairdressing elevated. I jumped on board with them and have been there since!

organic-hair-colorist

How did you discover Oway? What made you decide to switch to the Organic Way of life?

I had already began moving towards an organic and holistic lifestyle. My friends called me the “Bubble Boy” because of all my allergies. I discovered Oway through my friend Jennifer Ross. She began a holistic approach before I did and had already been working with the Simply Organic Beauty family. After research and testing Hcolor, I was blown away that a color line could be so clean and actually work! I leave the salon everyday able to breath, without skin irritations, and happy that I can still give my clients the results they are used to.

Who are the people who have inspired you to become a hair stylist?

At first it was people I had never met!  I knew their imagery: Vidal Sassoon, Annie Humphreys, Antionette Beenders, Vivienne Mackinder, Garren, the Mascolo men and so many more. After joining diPietro Todd and working with a few industry celebrities, they became my mentors and inspirers: Emily Kern, Cares Mills, Erica Campbell, Shelly Mohr, Sarah Classen-Taylor and so many more!  They taught me things I never knew. They taught me to master the rules…and then break them!

If you weren’t a hairdresser, what else would you do?

I would be a baker. I love food, I love to cook, and I LOVE to eat! There are so many parallels between baking and coloring: the precision, the timing, the measuring and quality of your product!

hair-color-treatment

Do you have a signature hairstyle/color that you enjoy doing? Which Oway products are you drawn to the most?

Personally I enjoy doing all colors and techniques, and make sure to keep a variety in my work. I am known for always creating dimension with any tone, and for my blondes. Nothing colored in nature is solid! The Oway products I’m drawn to are Oway Hbleach, Hcolor and the whole Hsystem!

Which 3 Oway products do you think should be a staple in every client’s hair care regimen?

oway-moisture-pack

Oway Micro-stimulating Hair Bath, Moisturizing Hair Mask, and Glossy Nectar.  Every client will always need a healthy scalp, hydrated hair, shine and heat protection. Healthy hair holds on to color better too!

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far?

My biggest challenge has always been balance between work and home life. If you are unbalanced in one, it shows up in the other. Our clients can feel that. I am constantly learning how to improve that balance so that I can be 100% present for each client and avoid becoming disenchanted or burned out.

Your hair color ideas are so unique! Where do you get your inspiration?

My inspirations come from everywhere! Art exhibits, nature, crafts, dreams, food, coworkers, clients, Instagram…You have to be in a state of play to create!

In an industry where following trends is common, what advice can you give to other stylists on how to find their very own style?

Make sure you master the Classic/Foundation Techniques! Trends are great; they will always come and but they will always go. They show us different perspectives. Trends, however, are just variations of Classic Techniques. Trends change – they are recycled, renamed and they are not always appropriate on every face shape, skin type or hair type.

Know the rules before you break them. Know why something reacts the way that it does. By mastering the Classic Techniques, you can be on trend, predict new trends, or make your own!

organic-hair-color

If you were to do a famous person’s hair, who would it be? Why?

I can’t answer this one! If they have good energy, and want healthy beautiful color, come and see me!

Holistic Hairdessing: The Future of the Beauty Industry

holistic-hairdressing-future-of-beauty

The Future is Holistic

A simple Google search for “organic hair color” will likely introduce you to countless hair color brands that tout themselves as “organic” or “natural”. And it’s not surprising.

According to market research, the organic and natural personal care market is predicted to explode to $22 billion by 2024. So, it doesn’t come as a shock that many brands are suddenly putting “organic” or “natural” labels on their products to appeal to green salons and health-conscious clients.

But what do these words really mean in the hairdressing industry? Why are organic or naturally derived products the better choice? And more importantly, how do we know which products are truly natural? This month, in American Salon Magazine, our experts weighed in to bring more education and transparency to the organic beauty movement. Here’s what we had to say:

At Simply Organic Beauty, all of our products contain organic or natural ingredients but we didn’t stop there. Our salon products are HOLISTIC – meaning they do not harm the HAIR, HEALTH, or the PLANET. Adopting this No Harm Mantra goes beyond the “organic” label and demands a stricter set of standards for our beauty products.

Ethical and Environmentally Friendly

To be considered a true green brand, a company must not only focus on using organic ingredients in their products – but they must also be committed to reducing their environmental impact. For example, here at Simply Organic Beauty, we offer eco-education, which include Salon Refill Programs and Upcycling Tips for salons – so both hair stylists and their clients are educated on how they can reduce their carbon footprint.

Aside from being eco-conscious, our product lines are all cruelty-free, because we firmly believe that no animal deserves to be killed and tortured in the name of research. There are a few steps you can take to ensure your products cause no harm to animals.

  • Look for cruelty-free salon products certified by reputable animal rights organizations, such as PETA and Leaping Bunny.
  • Research the parent company of your products, as they could still engage in animal testing. For example, Esteé Lauder tests on animals. They own brands that do not, but your money still goes to support animal testing.
  • Make sure your brand does NOT distribute products in countries that require animal testing. China requires animal testing by law, so steer clear of products available in China.

High-Performance Organic Salon Products

When people hear about “organic hair color”, they often equate it with “less effective”, which is a common misconception. Sure, it may not seem as aggressive as chemical-laden hair dyes, but it definitely is a healthier alternative and equally effective in coloring hair.

In the professional beauty industry, “organic” means products formulated with the LEAST amount of synthetic chemicals and the MAXIMUM amount of natural ingredients. For hair color to work, it needs a certain amount of chemicals for color molecules to bind and penetrate the hair shaft.

At Simply Organic Beauty, our mission is to provide safe and professional hair color formulated with pure botanical ingredients that make hair color last, while nourishing and repairing the hair.

One of our product lines – Oway Hcolor – is made up of 98.6% organic, biodynamic, and fair-trade ingredients with only 1.4% chemical ingredients necessary for the hair color to work. This makes Oway the most natural hair color in the professional beauty industry. In fact, Oway has been voted Best Ammonia-Free Hair Color for two years in a row, a testament to its efficacy.

“First of all, it’s super easy to use, and any formula I put together is gorgeous. You don’t have to struggle with gray coverage, either.  There’s no ‘oops’ factor. The organic ingredients that are in these products actually help plump up and repair the hair. You’re healing the cortex and the cuticle, and you’re not just adding silicones to create shine, you’re actually creating shine from the inside out. I think of it as hair repair, not just hair color.” – Rebecca Gregory, Simply Organic Beauty Education and Technical Director

100% Pure, Biodynamic Ingredients

In line with our mission to provide the safest and most natural professional hair color, we make sure that our products are only made with the purest plant-based ingredients obtained through fair trade. The ingredients we use are BIODYNAMIC, a holistic approach to farming that focuses on the overall health of the farm. This means not using chemicals and pesticides that interfere with the harmony and ecological balance among all living creatures.

“At Simply Organic Beauty, we’re using plants that aren’t just organic, they’re biodynamic – which means they’re grown without pesticides or polluting farm machinery. Instead, the plants are picked by real people in accordance with the moon’s lunar cycles.” – Scott Mitchell, Simply Organic Beauty CEO

This process ensures that the ingredients are ethically managed and harvested in their purest form.

Full Ingredient Disclosure

In recent years, many people have become increasingly aware of the toxins present in cosmetics. Health-conscious consumers are no longer just reading the front packaging. The word “organic” at the front doesn’t cut it anymore – they are now scrutinizing the back label for inconspicuous ingredients that may contain harmful chemicals.

read-the-labelCompanies have tried hiding (and many still do) the synthetic chemicals they use in “Fragrance or Parfum” which often causes allergic reactions and skin irritations.

Transparency, honesty, and integrity are the core principles that govern all the things we do at Simply Organic Beauty. We fully disclose our ingredients to our clients and we don’t just take product claims at face value. To be labeled as “natural”, a product must have at least 80% organic, natural, or naturally derived ingredients.

We are aware that switching to more natural hair color alternatives is not easy for salons, stylists, and clients alike, but the benefits always outweigh the risk. By choosing to go green, we are not just curbing exposure to toxic ingredients but we are also increasing our POSITIVE impact on the environment.

Organic Hair Color: 5 Things You Should Know

professional-organic-hair-color-brands

What is Organic Hair Color?

In the professional beauty industry, the term “organic hair color” refers to hair color made with organic botanicals and less chemicals. Organic, in this sense, is the same definition we use for our organic food standards:

Botanicals grown without the use of pesticides.

When most people refer to “organic hair color” they’re referring to professional organic hair color brands formulated with least amount of synthetic chemicals and the maximum amount of organic botanical ingredients.

While beauty professionals know the chemistry of hair color and how it works, many consumers do not. We hope this article sheds a little more light on the term “organic hair color” and how it came to be.

Does 100% Organic Hair Color Exist?

No. At this time, professional “organic hair color” must contain a certain percentage of synthetic ingredients to work consistently and effectively. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find a color line that uses the maximum amount of organic ingredients and the least amount of chemicals.

Note: The only 100% natural hair color is certain brands of henna. However, using henna on the hair isn’t always suitable for grey coverage and metallic salts can cause the hair to feel dry and damaged over time. Also, if henna users ever try to lighten their locks, it can pose serious risks to health of the hair.

Does Organic Hair Color Work?

organic-hair-color-review

Recall, no professional organic hair color brand is 100% natural. Any organic hair color product will contain a certain amount of chemicals necessary to perform. When searching for an organic hair color company what you need to ask about is percentages.

Specifically, what is their percentage of:

  • Pigments (PPDs, PTDS, etc)
  • pH Adjuster (Ethanolamine, etc)
  • Organic Ingredients (meaning botanicals only)!
  • Natural Ingredients
  • Naturally Derived Ingredients

Once you’ve determined the percentages of these components, you’ll be able to better decide which brand is the most “organic.”

Is Ammonia Considered an Organic Ingredient?

The best professional organic hair color brands have removed ammonia from their formulas. Why? As a gaseous substance, it’s been proven to cause respiratory issues, breathing challenges and allergies. Plus, most clients will agree: not having to smell ammonia is a much more pleasant experience.

To be clear: ammonia is a chemical organic compound. Not an organic botanical ingredient.

In chemistry terms, an organic compound means one thing: its molecules contain carbon. That’s it. It doesn’t speak to the safety or natural aspects of the ingredient. So, the next time someone says “ammonia is organic, it comes from the Earth” know this:

Ammonia is one of the most widely produced chemicals in the world. Ammonia found in hair color is not extracted from the soil or our bodies, it’s produced in a lab and has zero natural components.

What About Professional Ammonia Free Hair Color?

Not all ammonia-free hair color brands are created equal.

Simply choosing an ammonia-free hair color doesn’t ensure your clients hair will be healthier or that they won’t have an adverse reaction. While most ammonia-free hair colors won’t have the fume-like aroma of ammoniated hair color, they can still do more damage than necessary to the hair.

Here’s why:

Most brands use Ethanolamine (MEA) to replace ammonia, but they don’t consider the percentages of this ingredient. Both Ethanolamine and ammonia’s role in hair color is to raise the pH of the hair so the color molecules can penetrate.

When you use too much of either ingredient, the pH of the hair is drastically altered and the cuticle will have difficulty re-closing – even with a good conditioner. When the cuticle is unable to close, shine does not reflect off the scales because they’re disheveled and open, instead of tightly packed down.

Also, hair color will fade faster because of the cuticle’s inability to close and lock in molecules.

What’s the Best Professional Ammonia Free Hair Color?

You’ll want to choose an ammonia-free hair color line that uses their pH adjuster in minimal amounts. You’ll also want to choose a brand that ensures all Ethanolamine (MEA) is removed from the hair.

For example, Oway’s Hsystem is an award-winning ammonia-free, professional “organic hair color” line with service products that ensure all product is removed, while keeping the working pH of the color much lower than your typical ammonia-free hair color brand.

What Are Paraben-Free, Vegan Beauty Products ?

What are Vegan Beauty Products recommended by the Society of Cosmetics and Beauty? Vegan means the product contains no animal-derived ingredients, including any ingredients produced by animals. It’s this last clause that differentiates vegetarian and vegan products:  Vegetarian products contain no animal ingredients, but they may contain animal-produced ingredients, such as honey or beeswax.

Vegan products contain no honey, beeswax, or any other animal by-products.

What are Parabens? Parabens are synthetic preservatives used in cosmetics and personal care products, and can give many people allergic reactions. There are many types of Parabens such as, propylparaben, methylparaben and butylparaben; these are synthetic preservatives commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products like shampoos, skin creams and deodorants. They are suspected to be endocrine disruptors, and they have been found to mimic estrogen in laboratory experiments. Many people have allergic reactions to these preservatives causing skin rashes and irritation. Needless to say, there is a great ongoing debate as to the safety of products containing parabens.

SKIN is the largest organ of the body and absorbs whatever you put onto it; therefore, it is vital to keep the ingredients that we use non-toxic.  Through the use of organic, chemical-free products we believe that we have a much better chance at fighting unwanted aggravations, and possibly even cancer.

Here at Simply Organic Beauty, we strongly feel it is in our best interests to stay aware of what is in all of the products, lotions, makeup and hair products that we add to our bodies.  Have you ever turned over the bottle of product, and took a real look at all the long names of ingredients that you cannot even pronounce?  Rest assured that upon further research you might be appalled as to what you would find out and wonder “why am I using this stuff?”

Fortunately, there is a growing demand for paraben-free products with the increasing awareness of the harmful effects of these ingredients.  It is a scary thought to think that so many of the products that we use contain so many ingredients that can have long term harmful effects to our health.  It is best to be educated about what we are really using on ourselves, clients and our children.

Skeptics: There will always be people that scoff at the idea of organic and eco-friendly products, and think it is some kind of unnecessary way of life.  Ask yourself if your health is worth it to you?  If so, take some time, educate yourself on the issue and make your own decision as to what is really important to you.  If you feel that beauty an health can be integrated, and feel good as a stylist about offering safer options to your clients, we are here to be examples o f a company that cares for our stylists’, that breathe in all those toxic fumes, as well as the clients’ that are soaking up these unnecessary chemicals into their scalps.

Thankfully, we offer professional hair color lines that are paraben-free, cruelty free, vegan and free from many other toxic chemicals commonly found in most hair color.  We strive to bring the highest quality of certified organic ingredients because we care about the health of our planet and users.  Unlike some other beauty companies, at any time we offer public information about what is in all of our products.

We have a vision that in time, everyone will see the importance of raising awareness of what we are actually putting into our bodies and releasing into our environment. The desire for beautifying has remained evident over the decades, and it is our hope that we can help to always bring safe, toxic-free products, and hair color to our clients for many years to come. We pledge to stay current with the most up-to-date information about organics and sustainability to add positivity to the world of beauty.

What is Blonde?

What is BlondeFirst, let’s talk about what makes hair look like the color we see; blonde, brown, or red.  Natural hair color pigments called eumelanin and phaeomelanin are found in the cortex of the hair which is beneath the cuticle layers.   Natural haircolor that appears to be cool brown or black has eumelanin; the grainy black/brown pigment found in some hair.  When the eumelanin molecules are tightly packed into the cortex the hair appears dark brown or black.  Haircolor that appears to be a cool blonde also has eumelanin but it is diffused throughout the inside of the hair shaft which gives it the appearance of being lighter.
